The last perfect season in college basketball ended fifty years ago. It is still the last one.

01 / The number that hasn't moved. Thirty-two games. Thirty-two wins. Indiana in 1976 is the last team to finish a college basketball season undefeated and win the championship — and every March since has taken a swing at it and missed. Fifty tournaments. Zero repeats. That is not nostalgia, it is a record, and records are the one thing a fan can hold without arguing.

02 / What the game didn't have yet. No shot clock until 1985. No three-point line until 1987. The team you're commemorating played a sport that no longer exists: every possession could last as long as patience allowed, and every basket had to be manufactured inside the paint, against hands, without a shortcut from twenty-three feet. When people say the game was harder then, this is the part they mean. Watch a tape from that March and count how few easy points there are.

03 / What we made. A 1976 Indiana Hoosiers NCAA championship ring, built the way a championship ring is built — a sculpted face, the numerals set in relief rather than printed, the team mark raised so it reads by touch in a dark room. Edges are hand-finished, which means no two leave the bench identical, and we photograph them as they are instead of polishing the images into something they aren't. It has weight. Set it down on a table and it announces itself.

04 / Your name, in the same metal. The reason people order from us rather than from a souvenir site: we cut, we don't print. Your name and number go into the ring deep enough that the letters hold their own shadow, so twenty years of door handles and car keys won't sand them into a smear. Some buyers put their own name. Some put a seat number. One customer asked for the date of the last game his father attended, which is the kind of order we remember.

05 / If 1976 isn't your year. The custom shop exists for everything else: championship rings for any league or era, group rings for a team or a class, corporate rings for a company that would rather hand out metal than another engraved glass block, memorial rings when someone should have been at the ceremony. Describe the words and the shape, and a drawing comes back before anything is cut.

06 / Why this one, now. Fifty years is the last round anniversary this team will have while most of the people who watched it are still here to say so. The men on that roster are in their seventies. The footage is grainy and the sound is bad and it is the only recording of a perfect season that will ever exist.

A ring doesn't change any of that. It just means the person wearing it was paying attention.
